Final re-design: moi

This is the last piece that needed to be re-designed.

I re-interviewed myself, and what came out of it was fairly interesting to me... the place's meaning to me was less about the specific place itself (Mount Soledad cross), and more about my love/hate relationship with organized religions (actually, more of an admire/frustrate relationship, really).

So what is remaining is that I need to do the design for my wife's piece (beach/dog), and get feedback on the last handful that I have redone:

The more I work on all of these pieces, the more I find myself trimming verbiage more and more.

I kept working on Ashley piece that I just put up, and here is, I believe, an improved version.

I know I just put up the first design of this one here a few days ago, but I decided to crop the photo down to get rid of the shoreline behind here, and let the imagery be solely of her, and the wave. Should I crop the very bottom as well (the strip of brighter blue)?

What if I did an extreme crop like this?

Five updated images

Gave all the type some structure, tying into the natural grid of the image itself, and directed the eye to a flow of motion. Also pushed the type back in the center so it would not compete with the vibrancy of the sunset. 

Got rid of the border, cleaned up some type...

Here I reduced the type amount, and the size as well, taking care to not intrude into the Rabbi's shadow, while reinforcing the feeling of the pillar that he is leaning on.

I like the playfulness of the type here, but am I trying too hard with it? 

Cleaned up the bottom, alluding to the sand/grit feel of the beach, and found a better way of including her name.

Last New Design: Wendy - Bodysurfing

I originally was going to choose the photo below, but it was too stark when taking into account how positive her words were...

This, to me, highlights yet another reason why the interview portions of this project are so important.
The photos, words and treatment all have to work in symbiosis to get the full emotive impact across.

Rabbi Glenn

This is another that I have struggled mightily with for quite some time, until I finally realized that the power of this one is truly in the photo itself.

I almost forgot... I addressed (hopefully) some issues that Professor Zeller had with the type being too transparent.

New Ranger (and updated Cresencia)

Here is the one of the ranger. 

I think this one is surprisingly successful, given how much trouble I have had sketching out ideas and concepts.

The photo reflects not only the verbiage I chose, but also the overall spirituality of the place to her. Also, the typographic treatment reinforces not only the fluidity of the place, but also the mantra of her words... just let stress flow by you.

There were some concerns about legibility with the one of my wife, Cresencia.

So I took out the last line, reduced the skew, and bumped up the opacity somewhat.

There was also some suggestions about making the type appear more "written" in the sand, but I admit to being at a loss as to how to do that convincingly.

I chose a new photo for this one, and I think it works much better. 

I also chose new verbiage from the interview, which I think makes it much more powerful as well.
